The paper deals with optical gap solitons in the model of a fiber Bragg grating, which is subjected to a periodic modulation of the local reflectivity. In addition, the local refractive index is also periodically modulated with the same period. The model consists of two first order nonlinear partial differential equations with a gauge invariant nonlinearity of cubic type. The authors are looking for standing wave solutions of the system. The linearized stationary problem possesses gaps in the spectrum. Making use of analytic and computational methods, it is shown that there should exist a standing wave with any given frequency in a gap (gap soliton). In addition, the shape of such solitons is analyzed.
