Let \(D\subset{\mathbb C^n}\) and \(\Omega\subset {\mathbb C^N}\) be bounded domains equipped with the Bergman metrics \(ds_D^2\) and \(ds_\Omega^2\) such that their Bergman kernels \(K_D\) and \(K_\Omega\) extend meromorphically to neighborhoods of \({\overline D}\times D\) and \({\overline \Omega}\times \Omega\), respectively. Examples include pairs of bounded symmetric domains in their Harish-Chandra realizations. The problem of extension of germs of holomorphic isometries \(f: (D,x_0)\to (\Omega,f(x_0))\) up to normalizing constants is studied. Assuming \((D;ds_D^2)\) and \((\Omega; ds_\Omega^2)\) to be complete Kähler manifolds, the germ of \(f\) is proved to extend to a proper holomorphic isometric embedding such that the graph of \(f\) extends to a complex-analytic subvariety on a neighborhood of \({\overline D}\times{\overline \Omega}\). If the Bergman kernels extend to rational functions, the graph of \(f\) extends to an affine-algebraic variety. When \(D\) is the unit ball of \(\mathbb C^n\) with \(n\geq2\), a new rigidity result is obtained that guarantees the total geodesy of \(f\) under certain additional conditions. Examples of holomorphic isometries of the unit disk into polydisks that are not totally geodesic are constructed as well, which answers in the negative a conjecture of \textit{L. Clozel} and \textit{E. Ullmo} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 558, 47--83 (2003; Zbl 1042.11027)].
