Necessary and sufficient conditions for the finite sum of closed subspaces of a Hilbert space to be closed are given. The paper is semi-research and semi-expository. It can be a good inspiration for further investigations. Reviewer's remark. Some natural references are missing in this survey. I mean, first of all, the papers [\textit{J. Dixmier}, Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 77, 11--101 (1949; Zbl 0045.39102); J. Math. pur. appl., IX. Sér. 28, 321--358 (1949; Zbl 0045.39103)], and \textit{R. W. Cross} et al. [Math. Nachr. 173, 91--114 (1995; Zbl 0834.47001)]. It is worth mentioning that the proof of Proposition 5.8 in R. W. Cross et al. [op. cit.] implies that a Hilbert operator range which contains a closed subspace of the same density as the density of the whole space is a sum of two closed subspaces. This implies Theorem 5.2 of the paper under review.
