All rings considered in the paper under review are unital. A ring \(R\) is called a triangular ring if it is isomorphic to a ring of the form \(\left(\begin{smallmatrix} A&M\\ 0&B\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) where \(A\) and \(B\) are rings and \(M\) is a faithful unital \((A,B)\)-bimodule. Clearly this is equivalent to \(R\) possessing a nontrivial idempotent \(e\) such that \(eRf\) is a faithful bimodule over \((eRe,fRf)\) and \(fRe=0\) where \(f=1-e\). Assume now that \(Z=Z(R)\) is the centre of \(R\), and that \(Z(R)e=Z(eRe)\), \(Z(R)f=Z(fRf)\), and suppose that at least one of \(eRe\) and \(fRf\) has no nontrivial central ideals. The main result of the paper is Theorem 2.2 that describes the maps \(F_i,G_i\colon R\to R\) that are additive modulo \(Z(R)\) and that satisfy the functional identity \(F_1(x)y+F_2(y)x+xG_2(y)+yG_1(x)=0\), \(x,y\in R\). As corollaries to this theorem the author generalizes results due to \textit{W.-S. Cheung} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 63, No. 1, 117-127 (2001; Zbl 1014.16035)] and also results due to \textit{J.-H. Zhang} et al. [Linear Algebra Appl. 418, No. 1, 225-233 (2006; Zbl 1105.47031)].
