The paper deals with the iterative polynomial--like functional equation \[ f^n(x)+a_{n-1}f^{n-1}(x)+\cdots +a_1f(x)=F(x), \quad x \in I, \] where \(I\) is a real interval, \(f^k\) denotes the \(k\)--th iterate of \(f\) and \(F\) is a given function. The equation above is invistigated under the assumption that \(a_i \geq 0\) for all \(i=1,\cdots,n-1\). Various results concerning the existence of continuous solutions under different conditions about the given function \(F\); moreover these solutions are constructed via approximation by sequences of solutions which are locally linear near an end--point of the domain.
