The natural system of ``coupled equations'' (according to M. García-Fernández) is related to a Kähler manifold \(M\), a Kähler class and a vector bundle \(E\) on \(M\). Such a system can be constructed via the moment map. When \(E\) is a trivial bundle, the coupled equations can be solved by finding a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric and a flat connection. The constant scalar curvature Kähler equation appears as prescribing a zero of the moment map induced by the action of the Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms on the integrable complex structures. On the other hand, the first of the coupled equations appears naturally for the action of the gauge group of \(E\) in view of the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence. The motivation to study the coupled equations comes from the question for a good moduli problem for a compact polarized manifold \((M,L)\) with a Kähler class \(2\pi c_1(L)\) and a holomorphic \(G^{\mathbb C}\)-bundle \(E\) over \(M\). M. García-Fernández showed that it is possible to obtain examples of solutions to the coupled equations by deformations of the manifold \(M\) that carries a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric and a Hermitian Yang-Mills holomorphic vector bundle, if the automorphism group of \(M\) is finite. If \(M\) has complex dimension 1, then solutions of the coupled equations can be provided using the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for holomorphic bundles. On compact homogeneous Kähler-Einstein surfaces, examples can be provided using anti-self-dual connections. In higher dimensions, examples can be found by using projectively flat bundles over a manifold with constant scalar curvature and satisfying a natural topological condition. All these examples are very specific, because the manifold carries a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. The main goal of the present paper is to construct examples of solutions to the coupled equations on complex manifolds such that there is no solution to the constant scalar curvature Kähler equation in the class \(2\pi c_1(L)\). The examples are constructed on a ruled surface and a ruled threefold.
