The authors solve an open problem posed by \textit{P. Patricio} and \textit{R. E. Hartwig} [Appl. Math. Comput. 217, No. 2, 516--520 (2010; Zbl 1204.15014)]. Specifically, they characterize the existence of the group inverse of a \(2 \times 2\) matrix over an arbitrary ring and, moreover, they give a representation for such a group inverse. Some special cases and examples are also provided.
