For nonlinear partial differential equations describing a variety of physical and biological phenomena, travelling wave solutions are important since in many situations they determine the long term behavior of other solutions. In this paper, an effective method for determining an infinite sequence of periodic and solitary wave solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (NLPDEs) is proposed. A simple transformation technique and the division theorem are used to reduce some class of NLPDEs to the Riccati equation, and then an infinite sequence of periodic and solitary wave solutions is constructed by using the Bäcklund transformation of the Riccati equation and a nonlinear superposition principle. Illustrative examples are considered.
