Let \(M_H(r,c_1,c_2)\) denote the moduli space of torsionfree sheaves on a complex Hirzebruch surface \(Y\) of rank \(r\), with Chern classes \(c_i\), semistable with respect to an ample line bundle \(H\) on \(Y\). \textit{L. Costa} and \textit{R. M. Miró-Roig} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 509, 151--166 (1999; Zbl 0933.14024) had shown the rationality of \(M_H(r,c_1,c_2)\) under certain conditions. The authors extend these results to real Hirzebruch surfaces. Let \(X_{\mathbb R}\) be the anisotropic conic \(x_0^2+x_1^2+x_2^2=0\) in \({\mathbb P}^2_{\mathbb R}\). Let \(Y_{{\mathbb R}}:= {\mathbb P}(\xi)\) where \(\xi\) is a direct sum of two line bundles on \(X_{\mathbb R}\). Let \(d F\) be the component of \(c_1\) along the fiber \(F\) of \(Y_{\mathbb R}\) over \(X_{\mathbb R}\). Define \(\lambda= (c_2 - c_2^0)/(r-1)\) where \(c_2 \equiv c_2^0\) mod \((r-1), 0 < c_2^0\leq r-1, m= d-c_2-1-\lambda\) and assume that \(\Delta:= [c_2/r - c_1^2(r-1)/2r^2] >> 0\). Theorem. The moduli space \(M_H(r,c_1,c_2)\) is rational as a real variety if and only if one of the following holds. (1) \(m\) is even and \(r-c_2^0-1\) is even. (2) \(m\) is odd and \(c_2^0\) is even.
