Twisted generalized Weyl algebras (TGWA) are defined using a presentation which generalizes the classical Weyl and generalized Weyl algebras, by changing some commutativity relations to non-commutativity relations. This presentation starts with a choice of a ``Cartan'' subalgebra \(R\). In this paper the authors show that each non-zero ideal of a TGWA has non-zero intersection with the centralizer of \(R\). Further, they give necessary and sufficient conditions for the centralizer of \(R\) to be commutative and, finally, they present sufficient and necessary conditions for certain TGWAs to be simple. Several explicit examples are considered and various applications are provided. At the end of the paper the authors discuss their results in the context of graded algebras showing how they are related to, and sometimes different from, the corresponding results for other classes of graded algebras.
