In a paper published in the same issue of the journal, just before the paper under review [Ill. J. Math. 55, No. 3, 719--748 (2011; Zbl 1285.17001)], the author studies inverse limits \(A=\varprojlim A_i\) of nilpotent not necessarily associative algebras \(A_i\) and shows that the finite dimensional homomorphic images of \(A\) are also nilpotent. Now he considers varieties \textbf{V} of (nonassociative) algebras and assumes that \(A_i\in\mathbf V\) are such that there exists a finite-dimensional subalgebra \(S\) of \(A\) which is dense in \(A\) under the inverse limit of the discrete topologies on the \(A_i\). The paper contains sufficient conditions on \textbf{V} which guarantee that all algebra homomorphisms from \(A\) to finite-dimensional algebras \(B\) are continuous. In other words, the kernels of all such homomorphisms are open ideals. This condition is satisfied, in particular, if \textbf{V} is the variety of associative, Lie, or Jordan algebras. The author presents various examples which show that his hypotheses are essential, and gives a list of open questions.
