The authors consider subdivision methods generalised from scalar cases to the subdivision of matrices. To this end, they begin with a summary of the basic approaches to subdivision (in the scalar case) by ways of arithmetic and geometric means for instance. They then use the geometric means approach for positive definite matrices which are leading to general matrix subdivision schemes. In the following Chapter 4, these new methods are analysed in particular for convergence, smoothness and reproduction properties. Further properties (e.g. spectral issues) of the subdivision schemes for positive definite functions are considered in the penultimate section. The last chapter is devoted to a further generalisation of the approach to the larger class of semi-positive definite matrices.
