The subject of the paper under review is resolution of singularities in algebraic geometry. The main result is a stacky resolution theorem in log geometry. To state it, let \(S\) be the spectrum of a field, endowed with the trivial log structure. Let \(X\) be a fine saturated (fs) log scheme which is log smooth over \(S\). Then the result is that there exists a smooth log smooth Artin stack \(\mathfrak X\) over \(S\) and a morphism \(f: \mathfrak X \to X\) over \(S\) such that \(f\) is a good moduli space morphism in the sense of \textit{J. Alper} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 63, No. 6, 2349--2402 (2013; Zbl 1314.14095)] and the base change of \(f\) to the smooth locus of \(X\) is an isomorphism. Furthermore, \(\mathfrak X\) admits a moduli description in terms of log geometry. All of this generalizes the case when the charts of \(X\) are all simplicial toric varieties, which was established by \textit{I. Iwanari} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 45, No. 4, 1095--1140 (2009; Zbl 1203.14058)]. The paper gives two applications of the main result: a generalization of the Chevalley-Shephard-Todd theorem to the case of diagonalizable group schemes; and a generalization of work of \textit{L. Borisov, L. Chen} and \textit{G. Smith} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 18, No. 1, 193--215 (2005; Zbl 1178.14057)], \textit{B. Fantechi} et al. [J. Reine Angew. Math. 648, 201--244 (2010; Zbl 1211.14009)], and \textit{I. Iwanari} [Compos. Math. 145, No. 3, 718--746 (2009; Zbl 1177.14024)] on toric Deligne-Mumford stacks and stacky fans to the case of certain toric Artin stacks produced in this paper. | |||
