The present paper shows how a scaling symmetry can be determined and used algorithmically to reduce dynamical systems rationally. This method is applied to the reduction of the number of parameters in some remarkable models of mathematical biology. The main tool used is the Hermite normal form of the matrix of exponents along with its modular multiplier. All the algorithms in this paper are implemented in the computer algebra system Maple with a code available from the authors.
