Let \(\mathcal{L}=(L,\vee,\wedge)\) be a finite modular lattice and for every positive integer \(n\) let \(f_n\) be an \(n\)-ary operation on \(L\). The sequence \(f_1,f_2,f_3,\ldots\) is called an admissible operation sequence if it satisfies some conditions which are too technical to be reproduced here. These conditions are satisfied by commutators on algebras having a Mal'tsev term. The lattice \(\mathcal{L}\) is said to split strongly if there exist \(a\in L\setminus\{1\}\) and \(b\in L\setminus\{0\}\) with \(a\geq b\) such that \(L=[b,1]\cup[0,a]\). It is proved that the number of admissible operation sequences on \(\mathcal{L}\) is finite if and only if \(\mathcal{L}\) does not split strongly, and countably infinite otherwise.
