Let \(M\) be a compact \(n\)-dimensional manifold \(M\) with time-dependent smooth Riemannian metric \(g(t)\) whose volume is constant in \(t.\) The author gives a suitable form of the fundamental solution of the linear parabolic operator \(\Delta_{g(t)} -\partial/\partial t,\) where \(\Delta_{g(t)}\) stands for the time-dependent Laplacian based on \(g(t).\) The short-time behavior of that fundamental solution is studied, extending as consequence the \textit{S. R. S. Varadhan} estimates [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 20, 431--455 (1967; Zbl 0155.16503)] which hold in the case of a fixed metric.
