The authors simplify the main construction from the paper [\textit{S. Foucart} et al., Constr. Approx. 29, No. 2, 157--179 (2009; Zbl 1181.41017)] and discuss the question of two types of direct theorems in approximation theory: (a) the case of smooth function (Favard estimates); (b) the case of arbitrary continuous functions (Jackson-Stechkin estimates). It is shown that the Jackson-Stechkin inequality with nearly optimal constants follows from the Favard inequality. The main tool in the proof of this statement is the modulus of continuity \(W_{2k}\) of integrable periodic functions. The modulus \(W_{2k}\) is a special case of the generalized modulus of smoothness introduced by H. Shapiro (1968). The following two facts play a key role. 1. Uniform (in \(k\)) boundedness of the operators \(W_{2k}\)\,: \[ W_{2k}(f,h)\leq 3\|f\|, \quad f\in C(\mathbb{T}), \;h>0. \] \noindent 2. The Bernstein-Nikolskii-Stechkin inequality in terms of \(W_{2k}\). \smallskip\noindent New upper estimates of the Jackson-Stechkin constants for the approximation by periodic splines are obtained.
