The cohomology of groups arose from the extension problems in group theory. It now has many applications. An important next step was Mackey Functors; see [\textit{P. Webb}, A Guide to Mackey Functors, in: Hazewinkel, M. (ed.), Handbook of algebra. Volume 2. Amsterdam: North-Holland. 805--836 (2000; Zbl 0972.19001)]. An exciting development is fusion systems; see \textit{C. Broto} et al. [J. Am. Math. Soc. 16, No. 4, 779--856 (2003; Zbl 1033.55010)]. This has close relations to topology; see \textit{B. Oliver} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 137, No. 2, 321--347 (2004; Zbl 1077.55006)]. The purpose of this paper is to develop a Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence in the framework of fusion systems. In the absence of kernels, this is a delicate matter. In a suitable special case, the sequences coincide (proof by P. Symonds). Applications include results, in the framework of fusion systems of \textit{J. Stallings} [J. Algebra 2, 170--181 (1965; Zbl 0135.05201)], and \textit{L. Evens}, section 7.2.5 in [The cohomology of groups. Oxford etc.: Clarendon Press. (1991; Zbl 0742.20050)]. While the classical spectral sequence is not easy to compute, some early results had been obtained by ingenious resolutions. For example, \textit{C. T. C. Wall} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 57, 251--255 (1961; Zbl 0106.24903)] or \textit{J. Huebschmann} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 60, No. 1, 53--103 (1989; Zbl 0688.20032)]. Perhaps such devices might help with fusion systems.
