\textit{L. E. J. Brouwer}'s plane translation theorem [Math. Ann. 72, 37--54 (1912; JFM 43.0569.02)] has multiple proofs and equivalent formulations, the most germane being the result of \textit{M. Barge} and \textit{J. Franks} [in: From topology to computation: Proceedings of the Smalefest. Papers presented at the conference ``From topology to computation: Unity and diversity in the mathematical sciences'' held at the University of California at Berkeley, USA, August 5--9, 1990 in honor of Stephen Smale's 60th birthday. New York: Springer-Verlag. 186--195 (1993; Zbl 0806.57005)] that if an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the plane has a periodic point, then it has a fixed point. Here it is shown that an analogous result holds under suitable hypotheses for a homeomorphism which is only defined on a compact subset of a surface. The main theorem is that if a homeomorphism \(f:X\to Y\) is defined on a compact, simply connected, locally connected subset of the plane \(X\) and is isotopic to the identity on \(X\) then if \(f\) has a periodic orbit in \(C\) for some connected component \(C\) of \(X\cap Y\) it must have a fixed point in \(C\).
