Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic zero, \(C/k\) and \(C'/k\) be smooth projective geometrically irreducible curves such that there exists a finite regular Galois cover \(\pi:C'\to C\). Let \(E/k(C)\) be a non-isotrivial elliptic curve. The author proves a bound for the rank of \(E(k(C'))\) in terms of the genus of \(C\), the degree of the minimal discriminant of \(E/k(C)\), the conductor of \(k(S)\), the degree of the reduced ramification divisor of \(\pi\) and the so-called Ellenberg constant of the Galois group of \(\pi\). These results improve previous results by \textit{J. H. Silverman} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 577, 153--169 (2004; Zbl 1105.11016)] and by \textit{J. S. Ellenberg} [Compos. Math. 142, No. 5, 1215--1230 (2006; Zbl 1106.11021)], when the base field has characteristic zero.
