A ring extension \(B\subset A\) is said to have depth one if \(A\) is a direct summand of \(B^n\) as a left \(B\)-\(B\)-bimodule, for some positive integer \(n\). Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The author shows that an extension of finite dimensional semisimple \(k\)-algebras \(B\subset A\) has depth one if and only if their centers satisfy \(Z(B)\subset Z(A)\). If \(B\subset A\) is an extension of semisimple Hopf algebras over \(k\), it is proved that \(B\subset A\) has depth one if and only if \(B\) is a normal Hopf subalgebra of \(A\) and a certain action of the dual fusion category \(\text{Rep}(A^*)\) on the category \(\text{Rep}(B)\) is trivial. This extends a result of \textit{R. Boltje} and \textit{B. Külshammer} [Algebra Number Theory 5, No. 1, 63-73 (2011; Zbl 1236.20001)], where extensions of group algebras are considered.
