\textit{A. J. Ellis} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 22, No. 4, 381--385 (1990; Zbl 0713.46016)] has shown that, if \(M_1\) is a uniform algebra and \(M_2\) is a function space on the compact Hausdorff spaces \(X_1, X_2\) correspondingly, which serve as their Shilov boundaries, then any surjective real-linear isometry \(T : M_1\to M_2\) defines a homeomorphism \(\phi: X_2\to X_1\), and a clopen subset \(K\) of \(X_2\) so that \(T(f)=T(1)(f\circ\phi)\) on \(K\) and \(T(f)=T(1)\overline{(f\circ\phi)}\) on \(X_2\setminus K\) for every \(f\in A\) . In the present paper, the authors establish the above result for a not-presumed to be surjective \(T\) between certain spaces of functions. Theorem. Let \(X,Y\) be compact Hausdorff spaces and let \(A\) be a uniform algebra. For any real-linear isometry \(T: A\to C(Y)\), there is a \(Y_0\subset Y\), a surjective continuous function \(\Phi: Y_0\to\mathrm{ch}\,A\) and a continuous function \(\alpha: Y_0\to[-1,1]\) so that \(Tf(y)=T1(y)(\mathrm{Re}\,(f\circ\Phi)(y)+i\alpha(y)\mathrm{Im}\,(f\circ\Phi)(y))\) for all \(y\in Y_0\) and \(f\in A\). If \(|Ti|=1\) on \(Y_0\), then \(Y_0\) is a boundary for the range \(T(A)\) and there is a clopen subset \(K\subset Y_0\) so that \(T(f)=T(1)(f\circ\phi)\) on \(K\) and \(T(f)=T(1)\overline{(f\circ\phi)}\) on \(Y_0\setminus K\). It is shown that this is the case when \(T(A)\) is a \(C\)-subspace of \(C(Y)\). Analogous results are proven for Lipschitz spaces on compact metric spaces.
