The systole of a Riemannian \(3\)--manifold \(M\) is defined to be the shortest closed geodesic in \(M\). Then the systole length (i.e. the length of a systole) is an interesting invariant of \(M\). \textit{C. C. Adams} and \textit{A. W. Reid} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 128, No. 1, 103--110 (2000; Zbl 0958.57015)] proved that if \(M\) is a closed orientable \(3\)--manifold which does not admit any Riemannian metric of negative curvature, then for any hyperbolic link \(L \subset M\), the systole length of \(M - L\) is bounded above by \(7.35534\dots\). In the paper under review, the authors consider the case where \(M\) admits a Riemannian metric of negative curvature. By the positive solution of the Geometrization conjecture such a \(3\)--manifold is a hyperbolic \(3\)--manifold. In this setting, as the authors remark, there exist sequences of closed hyperbolic \(3\)--manifolds \(\{ M_n \}\) and hyperbolic links \(\{ L_n \subset M_n \}\) such that the systole length of \(M_n - L_n\) tends to infinity. However, the authors prove that if \(M\) is a closed hyperbolic \(3\)--manifold of volume \(V\), then for any hyperbolic link \(L \subset M\), the systole length of \(M-L\) is bounded above by \(\log((\sqrt{2}(C_0V)^{2/3} + 4 \pi^2)^2+8)\), where \(C_0 \approx 0.853\dots\). As part of the proof, they also prove that for a noncompact, finite volume hyperbolic \(3\)--manifold \(N\) of volume \(V\), the systole length of \(N\) is at most \(\mathrm{max}\{7.35534\dots, \log(2(C_0V)^{4/3} + 8)\}\).
