\textit{A. Gournay} [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 26, No. 3, 967--987 (2010; Zbl 1183.37012)] introduced a dimension-like quantity \(\dim_{\ell^p}\) to \(\Gamma\)-invariant subspaces of \(\ell^p(\Gamma;V)\) for an amenable group \(\Gamma\) and finite-dimensional vector space \(V\), generalizing the case \(p=2\) corresponding to the Murray--von Neumann dimension. Here these ideas are developed to define a notion of dimension for a Banach space carrying a uniformly bounded action of a sofic group together with a sofic approximation. This in particular extends the definition to a large class of non-amenable groups (no groups are known to not be sofic at this time). Similarly a notion of dimension is developed for \(\mathcal{R}^{\omega}\)-embeddable groups and the space of finite-dimensional Schatten operators. Invariance properties of the dimension, and situations in which it relates to the dimension of the vector space, are found. These results are applied to show non-equivalence of \(\ell^p\) spaces as representations of \(\Gamma\). In particular, the resulting dimension theory settles the question of \textit{M. Gromov} [Math. Phys. Anal. Geom. 2, No. 4, 323--415 (1999; Zbl 1160.37322)] for \(\mathcal{R}^{\omega}\)-embeddable groups.
