Solutions \(u\) to the linear wave equation with initial data \((f,g)\) are considered, \(u(t)=S(t)(f,g)\). Exterior energy estimates, for odd dimensions, have been proved in two previous papers from \textit{T. Duyckaerts} et al. [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 13, No. 3, 533--599 (2011; Zbl 1230.35067)] and [ibid. 14, No. 5, 1389--1454 (2012; Zbl 1282.35088)]. In the present paper, the authors show that in case of even dimensions the above mentioned energy estimates do not hold anymore. To do this, the asymptotic exterior energy is computed, for even as well as odd dimensions. Some particularly aspects are discussed. In the last chapter results connected with the profile decomposition of Bahouri-Gérard are presented.
