In the paper under review, the authors show that the normalized supercharacters of principal admissible modules over the affine Lie superalgebras \(\widehat{sl}_{2|1}\) and \(\widehat{psl}_{2|2}\) can be modified to form a modular or S-invariant family of functions, respectively. Via quantum Hamiltonian reduction, this leads to new families of positive energy modules over the \(N=2\) and \(N=4\) superconformal algebras, respectively, whose modified characters and supercharacters form a modular invariant family. For Parts II and III, see Adv. Math. 300, 17--70 (2016; Zbl 1372.17020) and Izv. Math. 80, No. 4, 693--750 (2016) and Izv. Ross. Akad. Nauk, Ser. Mat. 80, No. 4, 65--122 (2016; Zbl 1373.17027).
