The authors consider pseudo-differential operators on compact Hausdorff groups and give a characterization of the trace class property in terms of the symbol \(\lambda\). The proof proceeds as follows: First, the authors prove that the pseudo-differential operator \(T_\sigma\) in the present context is Hilbert-Schmidt if and only if the symbol \(\sigma\) is in \(L^2\). Then a formula for the symbol \(\lambda\) of the product \(T_{\sigma_1} T_{\sigma_2}\) is given, by means of the symbols \(\sigma_1,\sigma_2\) of the factors. A characterization of symbols of trace operators is then obtained, by using the fact that \(T_\lambda\) is trace class if and only if it can be written as a product of two Hilbert-Schmidt operators. A basic example is given by pseudo-differential operators on the unit sphere, cf. \textit{Z. Chen} and \textit{M. W. Wong} [J. Pseudo-Differ. Oper. Appl. 4, No. 1, 13--24 (2013; Zbl 1277.47063)].
