The authors discuss propagation of SH-waves in a viscoelastic layer overlying an elastic half space. The overlying layer is assumed to have depth dependent properties while the half space is under hydrostatic stress due to gravity. Assuming a time harmonic wave travelling in the horizontal direction, the solution and dispersion relation are derived in the layer and in the half space. Some numerical results illustrating effects of damping, inhomogeneity and friction on the velocity are presented.
