Colombeau theory faces a solid conceptual restructuring. Different areas of undergoing disconnected research enable fruitful and promising interactions. Many modifications of Colombeau algebras are available. In this article, the author presents a unifying hierarchy of the Colombeau algebras making clear their relation to each other. A unifying hierarchy is based on the idea of taking smoothing operators as a variable employed in the smoothing process of distributions. This leads to the general basic space \(\mathcal{E}(\Omega)\) which explains the formal relationship between various basic spaces of classical Colombeau algebras. As a footnote, the author outlines that ``\dots the definition of our general basic space is not only very natural and hence applicable to many situations, but it will also serve as a basis for further study of the quotient construction, and marks the beginning of a structure theory for Colombeau algebras.''
