The authors of the article under review offer a new approach to the proof of the Lifshits-Krein trace formula. The approach is a development of the Birman-Solomyak approach and the Voiculescu approach. The authors also generalize the Lifshits-Krein trace formula to \(\sigma\)-finite von Neumann algebras of type II.
