The \(C^*\)-Toeplitz algebra generated by continuous symbols on the unit circle modulo compact operators is isomorphic to the commutative \(C^*\)-algebra of continuous functions on the unit circle. If we allow additionally for piecewise continuous and quasi-continuous symbols, then the quotient modulo compacts is still commutative. This further remains true if, additionally, a composition operator with a parabolic linear fractional non-automorphism of the unit disc or, equivalently, so-called Fourier multipliers are included. The paper contains a historical sketch of these developments. The main result is an explicit description of the maximal ideal space of the commutative \(C^*\)-algebra generated by all these operators modulo compacts. The proof uses a theorem of [\textit{S. C. Power}, Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 24, 47--53 (1981; Zbl 0439.46042)] which indicates how the maximal ideal spaces of the parts can be put together. As an application, explicit descriptions of essential spectra are given for linear combinations of Toeplitz operators and a certain type of composition operators called quasi-parabolic.

C. As an application, explicit descriptions of essential spectra are given for linear combinations of Toeplitz operators and a certain type of composition operators called quasi-parabolic.
