A new symmetric discontinuous Galerkin method for the problem \[ -\Delta u=f \; \text{in} \; \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}, \] \[ u=g \; \text{on}\; \partial \Omega, \] is proposed and analyzed. A distinctive feature of the method is that it does not require any artifical penalization in its formulation. Optimal-order estimates are proven provided that the solution is sufficiently regular. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results.
