The author proposes the optimal \(L^2\) error estimate of a linearized Crank-Nicolson Galerkin finite element method (FEM) for a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation without any stepsize restriction, while all previous works require certain conditions on the time stepsize. Their numerical results confirm the theoretical analysis and show that the time-step restriction is not necessary. The method used in this paper can also be extended to the second linearized scheme and other higher-order schemes to obtain the optimal \(L^2\) error estimate unconditionally.
