The scalar delay differential equation \[ \frac{d\,y(t)}{d t}=g(y(t),y(t-\tau)) \] is considered with large delay \(\tau>0\) and where \(g:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}\) is a smooth function which vanishes at zero. Aiming to describe locally the dynamics of the equilibrium \(y=0\), firstly, the authors investigate spectral properties of the corresponding linearized system. The asymptotic properties of the spectrum thus allow a qualitative analysis of possible types of destabilizing bifurcation. In addition, a unified description of the solutions of the delay equation in the vicinity of the stationary state is given based on the behavior of an associated amplitude type equation. Exponential estimates for the evolution operator of some pertinent delay differential equations are also derived.
