Compact wavelet matrices are considered, i.e., only a finite number of coefficients are nonzero. The corresponding wavelets have thus compact support. A polyphase representation of the wavelet matrices \(A\) of order \(m\) is proposed, which yields \(A(z)= \sum_{k=0}^N A_k z^k\) which has order \(N\). A Wiener-Hopf factorization of the matrix polynomial is proposed using unitary matrix functions. Thus, compact wavelet matrices can be efficiently constructed. Possible applications are wavelet completion problems where the first row of the wavelet matrix is given and the remaining rows have to be determined. This allows for example to construct finite impulse response filters in digital signal processing; other applications lay in the field of cryptography.
