A finitely generated module \(E\) over a noetherian local ring \(R\) is called a local module, if \(\Lambda:=\Hom_R(E,E)\) has a unique two-side maximal ideal. This paper gives several homological properties of local modules and their endomorphism rings. The endomorphism ring has a essential role for example in the study of non-commutative desingularization. In order to give one of the main results, suppose \(R\) is normal, \(E\) is local, its rank is invertible in \(R\) and \(\Lambda\) is of finite global dimension. Then \(\Lambda\) is maximal Cohen-Macaulay, and more interestingly, \(R\) is regular. The proof reduces to show \(E\) is \(\Lambda\)-projective. In fact, a result of the paper says that such a module should be free over \(R\). The paper finishes with a conjecture on projectiveness of \(E\) as \(\Lambda\)-module when \(E\) is local, \(\Lambda\)-cyclic and of finite projective dimension as a module over \(\Lambda\).
