Let \(X\) be any variety over a finite field or the field of complex numbers. Using truncation functors introduced by \textit{S. Morel} in [J. Am. Math. Soc. 21, No. 1, 23--61 (2008; Zbl 1225.11073)], the authors construct a new complex \(EC_X\) in the derived category of mixed Hodge modules on \(X\), called the \textit{weightless complex} of \(X\). They consider the \textit{weightless cohomology} groups of \(X\), namely the hypercohomology groups of \(EC_X\), denoted by \(EH^*(X)\). The authors prove that weightless cohomology has several properties analogous to those of usual cohomology and intersection cohomology, including a ring structure. Further, they show that weightless cohomology ``lies between'' the usual and the intersection cohomologies, namely that the natural map \(H^*(X)\to IH^*(X)\) factors through \(EH^*(X)\). Numerous classes of examples are discussed, including cases when \(EH^*(X)\) coincides with \(H^*(X)\), and cases when \(EH^*(X)\) coincides with \(IH^*(X)\).
