In this paper the author studies the metric heights of algebraic numbers introduced by the reviewer and \textit{C. J. Smyth} in [J. Number Theory 86, No. 2, 368--387 (2001; Zbl 1030.11056); Period. Math. Hung. 46, No. 2, 135--155 (2003; Zbl 1050.11089)]. Here, for a multiplicative abelian group \(G\) he defines a logarithmic height \(\phi : G \to [0, \infty)\), where \(\phi\) is a function satisfying \(\phi(1)=0\) and \(\phi(\alpha)=\phi(\alpha^{-1})\) for each \(\alpha \in G\). He further defines the \(t\)-metric version of \(\phi\) by \[ \phi_{t}(\alpha)=\inf \bigg\{\big(\sum_{n=1}^N \phi(\alpha_n)^t\big)^{1/t} >: > N \in \mathbb{N}, \alpha_n \in G, \alpha=\prod_{n=1}^N \alpha_n\bigg\} \] and studies the function \(\phi_t(\alpha)\). In the paper several theorems for the metric height \(\phi_t(\alpha)\), where \(t \in (0,\infty]\), are established. They are more general than those obtained for the metric Mahler measure.
