The authors make use of the notion of an asymptotic resemblance structure which they had introduced elsewhere. An asymptotic resemblance relation on a set \(X\) is an equivalence relation \(\lambda\) on the family of subsets of \(X\) that in addition satisfies: (1) if \(A_1\lambda B_1\) and \(A_2\lambda B_2\), then \((A_1\cup A_2)\lambda(B_1\cup B_2)\), and (2) if \((B_1\cup B_2)\lambda A\) and \(B_1\), \(B_2\neq\emptyset\), then there are nonempty subsets \(A_1\) and \(A_2\) of \(A\) such that \(A=A_1\cup A_2\) and \(B_i\lambda A_i\) for \(i\in\{1,2\}\). A set with such a structure is called an asymptotic resemblance space. Using an inductive approach (see Definition 3.3), they are able to define large scale inductive dimension for a set with such a structure. There is a notion of asymptotic equivalence between sets with these structures; Theorem 3.6 shows that large scale inductive dimensions are equal under asymptotic equivalence. A coarse structure on a set (see Section 2) induces, by Example 2.4, an asymptotic resemblance on that set. So asymptotic resemblance is a tool for studying coarse structures. As pointed out by the authors on p. 108, ``One of the advantages of our definition is that, for finding the large scale inductive dimension of a coarse space \(X\) the set \(X\) does not need to have a topology.'' In [Topology Appl. 140, No. 2--3, 203--225 (2004; Zbl 1063.54027)], \textit{A. Dranishnikov} and \textit{M. Zarichnyi} introduced the concept of asymptotic dimensiongrad. The authors prove in Section 4 that large scale inductive dimension and asymptotic dimensiongrad are equal for the class of \(r\)-convex metric spaces. They note that geodesic metric spaces and finitely generated groups are examples of \(r\)-convex metric spaces, so there is a wide field of application for such a result.
