The article under review studies the Rouquier dimension of the bounded derived category of an abelian category with enough projectives, i.e., the minimal number of steps that are required to generate a triangulated category starting from a strong generator. In the case of an abelian category \(\mathcal{A}\) of finite representation type it was known that \(\dim\mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{op}}(\mathcal{A})\leq 1\). By using resolutions with components in a semiresolving subcategory \(\mathcal{X}\) of finite representation type it becomes possible to get the bound \[ \dim\mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{op}}(\mathcal{A})\leq\mathcal{X}\mathrm{-dim}(\mathcal{A})+1 \] in terms of the length of minimal such resolutions. An analogous result can be found by considering the subcategory \(\Omega^d(\mathcal{A})\) of \(d\)th syzygies, provided it is of finite representation type. The article also studies Rouquier dimension for relative homological algebra, proving that \[ \dim\mathrm{D}_{\mathcal{X}}^{\mathrm{op}}(\mathcal{A})\leq\max\{2,\mathcal{X}\mathrm{-dim}(\mathcal{A})\} \] for a semiresolving contravariantly finite subcategory of finite representation type. This for instance recovers results of \(d\)-Gorenstein Artin algebras of finite Cohen--Macaulay type [\textit{A. Beligiannis}, Adv. Math. 226, No. 2, 1973--2019 (2011; Zbl 1239.16016)]. Similar results in the context of relative homological algebra can be found in [\textit{T. Aihara} et al., J. Algebra 399, 205--219 (2014; Zbl 1305.18044)].
