The author studies finite rank self-adjoint Hankel operators. He obtains an explicit formula for the total multiplicity of the positive spectrum and for the negative spectrum. Surprisingly, it is shown that if we perturbe such finite rank Hankel operators by the Carleman Hankel operator, then the sums of the multiplicities of positive eigenvalues and of negative eigenvalues do not change.
