A topological space which is a finite union of paracompact, dense subspaces is metacompact and even paracompact if it is also normal. Versions of this result apply when `paracompact' is replaced by `para-Lindelöf,' and `metacompact' by `meta-Lindelöf.' However it is shown that we cannot replace `paracompact' by `metacompact.' Extensions of these results also include strongly metacompact spaces, while a relevant cardinal invariant called the paracharacter is introduced.
