The authors consider and study height functions on symmetric spaces \(M\cong G/K\) embedded in the associated matrix Lie group \(G\). They introduce the height function \(h_X^M\) on \(M\), and a generalized Cayley transform between the Lie group \(G\) and its Lie algebra, useful for the knowledge of the critical set of \(h_X^M\). Another paper of the authors directly connected to this topic is [Ann. Global Anal. Geom. 39, No. 3, 325--335 (2011; Zbl 1214.55006)] (with \textit{A. Gómez-Tato}).
