The Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional Camassa-Holm (CH) equation is considered when the initial data is a step-like function, i.e. it tends to different limits as spatial variable tends to plus or minus infinity. The Lax pair for the CH equation is written. The associated vector-matrix Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem in a class of meromorphic function is derived. Further, this problem is reduced to a RH problem for analytic functions. The reconstruction of the solution of the CH equation from the RH problem is described and its asymptotic behavior is investigated.
