The paper contains two main results. First of all, it is shown that the classical commutator of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function with a function \(b\in BMO(\mathbb{R}^N)\) satisfies a weak-type \(L(\log L)\) estimate provided that \(b^{-}:=-\min\{b,0\}\) is in \(L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)\). Secondly, it is proved that for a given measurable function \(b\), the maximal commutator \(C_b\), defined by \[ C_b(f)(x):=\sup_{x\in Q} \frac{1}{|Q|} \int_Q |b(x)-b(y)| \;|f(y)| \;dy, \] enjoys a weak-type \(L(\log L)\) estimate if and only if \(b\in BMO(\mathbb{R}^N)\).
