Fano manifolds admitting Kähler-Einstein metric have been studied intensively over the last years, culminating in the landmark papers of \textit{X. Chen} et al. [J. Am. Math. Soc. 28, No. 1, 183--197 (2015; Zbl 1312.53096), ibid. 199--234 (2015; Zbl 1312.53097), ibid. 235--278 (2015; Zbl 1311.53059)] showing the equivalence of the Kähler-Einstein condition with \(K\)-polystability. In this paper, the author derives some important consequences of this breakthrough for compactifications of moduli spaces. The main result is that the moduli space \(M\) of \(K\)-polystable smooth Fano manifolds of dimension \(n\) admits a natural compactification by an algebraic space \(\bar M\) such that the boundary parametrises \(K\)-polystable \(\mathbb Q\)-Fano varieties with klt singularities. In particular all the varieties appearing in the boundary are normal, an important difference to the case of moduli spaces of projective manifolds with ample canonical bundle. In the language of differential geometry, the main statement can be restated as follows: the Gromov-Hausdorff compactification of \(M\) has a structure of compact Hausdorff Moishezon analytic space. The author recalls the various tools needed for the proof of the main theorem which makes this paper accessible for non-specialists. Some related results were obtained by \textit{Ch. Li, X. Wang and Ch. Xu} [``Degeneration of Fano Kahler-Einstein manifolds'', preprint, \url{arXiv:1411.0761}].
