The authors extend the fundamental result of \textit{M. Lefranc} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris 246, 1951--1953 (1958; Zbl 0084.10302)] about spectral synthesis on finitely generated abelian groups by proving that spectral synthesis holds for a variety on an abelian group if spectral analysis holds on it and the residue ring of the annihilator of the variety is a Noether ring. Their proof is based on a new variant of the well-known Krull intersection theorem, namely that the intersection of all positive powers of all maximal ideals in a Noether ring is zero. It should be noted that Lefranc's paper is incorrectly referenced in the article under review: its volume number and publication year are exchanged with those of \textit{B. Malgrange}'s paper [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris 238, 2219--2221 (1954; Zbl 0055.10203)].
