The subject is the study of the cubic moment of the central values of the \(L\)-functions \(L(s,f\otimes\chi)\), where \(f\) is a holomorphic cusp form for \(\Gamma_0(q)\) of even weight \(k\geq 2\) and \(\chi\) is the real primitive character mod \(q\), \(q\) odd and squarefree. The author considers, more general than the sum of third powers, a sum of products of three factors \(L({1\over 2}+\alpha_i, f\otimes\chi), i=1, 2, 3\). Summation is over an orthonormal basis of Hecke eigenfunctions. The main result of the article is a development of this sum into main terms, other terms and a small error term. The main terms are products of three values of \(\zeta_q\) multiplied by the product of the three \(L_\infty({1\over 2}+\alpha_i, f\otimes\chi)\). The ``other'' terms are sums of integrals involving products of four values of \(L(s,\psi)\), \(\psi\) a primitive character mod \(q\). Let we denote the sum of the main terms by \(MT\) and the total sum by \(M\). An application of the Petersson trace formula as in [\textit{J. B. Conrey} and \textit{H. Iwaniec}, Ann. Math. (2) 151, No. 3, 1175--1216 (2000; Zbl 0973.11056)] leads to a decomposition of \(M\) into diagonal terms and non-diagonal terms in which Kloosterman sums appear. Diagonal terms and Kloosterman terms are computed separately. Both types contribute to the main terms and by a mysterious cancellation we are left with the announced \(MT\) plus the greater part of the Kloosterman terms. The computation of the remaining Kloosterman terms completes the development of \(M\). A consequence of the main result is an estimate for the cubic moment improving the estimate in [loc. cit.]. Also an improved bound for \(L({1\over 2}, f\otimes\chi)\) follows. | |||
