    Let for a natural number \(n\) the set of all polynomials of degree at most \(n\) be denoted by \({\mathbf P}_n\) and let \(\mu\) be a nonnegative Borel measure on \({\mathbb R}\) with infinite support \(S\). Given \(n\in {\mathbb N}\), the Christoffel function associated with \(\mu\) is defined as \[ \lambda_n(\mu,z)=\min_{P\in {\mathbf P}_n,\,P(z)=1}\,\int_{{\mathbb R}}\,|P|^2 d\mu,\;z\in {\mathbb C}. \] For the orthonormal polynomial \(p_n(\mu)\) with respect to \(d\mu\) of degree \(n\), let \(\gamma_n\) be its leading coefficient; then the notation \(\mu\in\mathbf{Reg}\) means \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\,\gamma_n^{1/n}={1\over \text{cap}(S)}. \] The main result of the paper is now \vskip0.3cm {Theorem 1.} Let \(\mu\in\mathbf{Reg}\) with compact support \(S\subset {\mathbb R}\), and let \(x_0\) be a point in the interior of the support. Suppose that in a neighborhood of \(x_0\) the measure \(\mu\) is absolutely continuous, say \(d\mu(x)=w(x)dx\), and its density \(w\) has one-sided limits at \(x_0\) so that \[ w(x_0^{-})=\lim_{x\rightarrow x_0-0}\,w(x)\geq 0,\;w(x_0^{+})=\lim_{x\rightarrow x_0+0}\,w(x)\geq 0 \] exist. Then \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\,n\lambda_n(\mu,x_0)=\left\{\begin{matrix} {1\over \omega_S(x_0)}{w(x_0^{+}-w(x_0^{-})\over \log{w(x_0^{+}}-\log{w(x_)^{-}}} & \text{if }w(x_0^{-})>0,\,w(x_0^{+})>0\text{ and }w(x_0^{-})\not= w(x_0^{+}),\cr {w(x_0)\over \omega_S(x_0)} & \text{if }w(x_0^{-})= w(x_0^{+})>0,\cr 0 & \text{if }w(x_0^{-})\cdot w(x_0^{+})=0,\cr\end{matrix}\right. \] where \(\omega_S(x_0)\) denotes the density of the equilibrium measure of \(S\) with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
