The paper addresses the numerical approximation of the Monge-Ampère equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions using a finite-dimensional space of \(C^1\) functions which are piecewise polynomials of degree \(d\) at least 2. A nonlinear discrete problem is formulated. It is assumed that the discrete problem has a strictly convex solution. This assumption is supported by numerical experiments in two dimensions. An iterative method is proposed and a convergence of the iterations is proved. The iterative method looks like a Newton's method and it depends on a parameter \(\epsilon\) which has to be chosen carefully. Some numerical experiments are presented using the spline element method.
